“GO TO” or “TO GO”?

Monday, October 1st, 2007

When I prepare for a keynote presentation or a seminar, I always spend a great deal of time thinking about what message would be most helpful to me if I were sitting in the seat looking up at the front. A room of educators, salespeople, managers or CEO’s, it makes no difference. A well done keynote can set a stage for an entire conference. Increasing productivity, growing the bottom line, turning out more product, learning a new technique, viewing a new product or just networking with others really are what conferences are all about. My purpose is to get folks thinking and feeling so that they want to take action, be more productive, and be challenged to be the people who are the foundations in their work place, the “go to” people. We all need these concrete, go get it, do it, complete it type people. We all know the folks who spend more time checking their watches, looking for the opportunity to slide out of work early or to extend that lunch break a bit longer. I call these folks “to go” people because when asked to do something they often respond with “I’ve only got ten minutes to go”. These “to go” people oftentimes do not understand the “go to” people and have not really looked at the difference between the two. Think about your work setting. Who are the people who get it done, who somehow find the way through the red tape, poor communication, and lack of time? Ever wonder why in every workplace there are the “go to” people and the “to go” people? Give some thought to what you do everyday, how you do it, who you effect. A little self examination on why you do what you do for work can oftentimes change the “to go” into the “go to” employee! One of my challenges as a keynote motivational speaker is to assist employees in recognizing and understanding the difference between the two.
